This course introduces the application and the principles behind the Internet of Things (IoT). The course covers the infrastructure-related architectures, technologies and protocol frameworks that enable IoT. The course will expose the participants to the use of these technologies for various applications.

This course introduces the design principles of the Internet of Things (IoT) and their device and infrastructure-related architectures, technologies and protocol frameworks that aimed at enabling the formation of highly distributed and ubiquitous networks with seamlessly connected heterogeneous devices.
Participant will learn to design and analyze such networks in order to support the development of intelligent services with given performance requirements in a variety of application domains. In particular, attendees will learn about the major architectures and paradigms for the Internet of Things, and protocols at the different levels of the IoT stack and also will learn to map those concepts with the OSI model by means of access layer (including sensor, vehicular and cellular networks for machine-to-machine communication) and network layer (with particular emphasis on IPv6-based solutions), and analyze their performance.
The course will also introduce technologies and protocols at the service and application layers, which enable the integration of embedded devices in web-based, distributed applications. Participants will get the notions for service creation, customization, execution and deployment in distributed IoT heterogeneous environments.
You will learn the IP for Smart Objects motivation and main challenges, IEEE 802.15.4, MQTT and Constrained Application Protocol (CoAP) features, interaction model, packet format, messages and request/response sublayers.
At the end of this course, attendees will demonstrate the ability to:
- Understand what IoT technologies are used for today, and what is required in certain scenarios.
- Understand the types of technologies that are available and in use today and can be utilized to implement IoT solutions.
- Demonstrate understanding of network layer support of IoT.
- Demonstrate understanding of IoT and major machine-to-machine (M2M) communication â€¨protocols.
- Design an end-to-end IoT project with all the possible components.
- Characterize the Internet of Things (IoT) and enumerate its distinctive characteristics.

About the Instructor
Shivakumar Mathapathi – CTO Dew Mobility and Instructor at Santa Clara University, Cal Poly (CSU)
Shivakumar a seasoned technology, IoT Educationalist and practitioner with more than 25 years of experience in product development, faculty and mentorship in executing smart city and assisted living IoT enabled projects. He designed syllabus for The IoT course – Masters curriculum (4 units) taught at Santa Clara University and California Polytechnic State University. He led capstone design project at Cal Poly (Part of California State University) to design and develop IoT cloud platform.
He has volunteered and serving as advisory member at the San Jose City Mayor’s visioning process for Civic Innovation in smart cities and Big Data Analytics. Shivakumar has also contributed to Open IoT project sponsored by European commission.
As part of academic research and innovation, he is involved in architecture design and development of smart city projects such as smart trash monitoring and smart trail traffic monitoring. He is currently serving as IoT technical Evangelist and Chief technology officer for Dew Mobility, CA. Shivakumar is the capstone Lecture at Leavey School of Business- Santa Clara University, mentoring Master of Science in Information system students for IoT projects.
