Dynasonics Produces Compact Transit Time Clamp-On Flow Meter
Dynasonic's new series TFXL Ultrasonic Transit Time Clamp-on Flow Meter clamps onto the outside of a pipe and does not contact the internal liquid. The non-invasive unit reduces material costs by using a clamp-on sensor that eliminates the need for in-line flanges, pipe fittings, strainers and filters. The TFXL series is designed to replace mechanical flow meters in applications where liquid conditions tend to damage or impede mechanical flow meter operation.
The TFXL is housed in an enclosure suitable for outdoor mounting and is available with a local display featuring rate and total flow in a choice of several engineering units. The TFXL can be installed and fully operational in minutes, with no need to break into pipelines. There are no moving parts, so repair kits or replacements parts aren't needed. Compact integral mount systems can accommodate pipes 2 inches and smaller, and remote mount systems are available in pipe sizes ½ inch and higher.
All series TFXL meters provide two flow rate outputs, 4 to 20 mA analog and a simulated turbine meter or TTL-pulse frequency, allowing direct interface to data collection systems. With ease of operation a key component in designing the series TFXL, Windows based software utility UltraLink is available to allow users to easily configure, calibrate and troubleshoot by a notebook PC.

Progress Energy and Itron Complete AMR Deployment in Record Time
Itron has completed the fastest automated meter reading (AMR) deployment in North America for Progress Energy, in a record time of 18 months. More than 2.7 million electro-mechanical meters were replaced with Itron's AMR-equipped Centron solid-state meter.
Progress Energy is one of the nation's largest investor-owned electric utilities, serving customers in Florida, North Carolina and South Carolina. The Centron meters were installed in all three states, with an aggressive schedule to finish the deployment in less than two years. On its peak day, Progress Energy, through its contract with Itron, completed more than 20,000 meter exchanges in a single day.
"In addition to a speedy installation, this project provides a less intrusive meter-reading process for our customers and accurate, real-time information on energy usage," said Bill Johnson, president and chief operating officer of Progress Energy. "This initiative also is benefiting customers by reducing operating expenses in the long term."
Johnson said his company expects to save $21 million annually with AMR technology. He also said Progress Energy has experienced a 50 percent reduction of meter-related billing complaints from previously estimated meter reads, inaccurate utility bills and work order errors.
