Ferraz Shawmut's Diris Offers Simple, Convenient Digital Energy Metering And Switchboard Management
Ferraz Shawmut has released the Diris, a digital multi-measurement device that's part of the Socomec product line. Designed for the niche market of switchboard builders the Diris measures and monitors the electrical values primarily on switchboards, while providing energy metering and management (electricity, water and gas). It also remotely controls and commands equipment with the correct add-on modules installed.
Diris offers quick data access with convenient pushbuttons, allowing users to reach any measurement without pressing any button more than four times. A backlit LCD display guarantees clear visibility, and an ASIC chip ensures superior accuracy levels. In addition, add-on modules plug into the back of the DIRIS to provide expanded capabilities like pulse output, communications and harmonic analysis. This allows users to only purchase the capabilities they need.
"This device has been proven outside of the North American marketplace, because it offers easier operation, better visualization and the option for users to add only the feature modules they want - without exhausting their budgets," said Mike Quinlan, business development manager - switch products.
The compact 96 sq. mm meter makes the Diris easy to install, with quick-mounting retaining clips and easy-to-wire terminal blocks. The device comes in A20 and A40 versions. It's UL listed and CSA certified.
Garrad Hassan has made Available its GH SCADA For Mitsubishi's MWT92 2.4MW Turbine
Garrad Hassan has developed an interface between the GH SCADA solution and the Mitsubishi Heavy Industries MWT92 2.4 MW turbine. This interface and the GH SCADA solution are currently being utilized to monitor and control the prototype MWT92/2.4, undergoing long-term testing at MHI's Yokohama site.
GH is ready to deploy this new interface for the MWT92/2.4 and has already received inquiries about the GH SCADA system for projects using this turbine in the US. GH provides its GH SCADA solution for monitoring and control of over 600 MW of MHI turbines and expects that total to nearly double by the end of 2007. The GH SCADA system is currently under evaluation for two projects that will be using the 2.4 MW turbines.
Elster AMCO Water Launches New AMI Solution for The Water Industry
Elster AMCO Water, Inc. has launched its new advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) solution for the water industry. A provider of advanced metering technology and intelligent metering solutions, Elster AMCO Water continues its history of delivering solutions-based metering products and services to the North American markets of the water utility business.
evolution AMI is powered by Wavenis technology, a mature wireless technology from Elster Group's Coronis Systems. Designed for competitive performance, evolution AMI empowers water utilities with a fully automated metering infrastructure that provides functionality far superior to traditional automated meter reading (AMR). An intelligent two-way communications system and mesh network topology enables any water utility to benefit from a fully migrateable (mobile) AMR to enhanced (fixed network) AMI capability without system change out. A robust radio-based system makes it adaptable to all installation environments (rural or urban).
Elster AMCO Water remains committed to water conservation. evolution AMI enables consumers and water utilities to use water resources wisely. Water utilities can leverage evolution's ability to generate customer water usage data through time-based rates or time-of-use (TOU) rates with in-home user displays that provide a real-time picture of consumer's water consumption. The water utility is further empowered with the ability to remotely decrease water pressure or close water flow without having to deploy field personnel.

Kyocera Releases Two M2M Modules
Kyocera Wireless Corp. recently launched two new M2M (machine-to-machine) modules for CDMA 1xRTT (code division multiple access single carrier radio transmission technology) networks, the Kyocera 300 module and Kyocera 1xD module.
The technology provider says the Kyocera 300 offers integrated voice, data and autonomous GPS (global positioning system) capabilities on a small footprint. What's more, the fully integrated autonomous GPS offers streaming data from the National Marine Electronics Association (NMEA). According to Kyocera, this feature offers "in service" cost advantages compared to assisted-GPS by allowing GPS fixes direct from satellite feeds without the need to connect to a wireless network.
The Kyocera 300 Module also allows the host device to determine which type of position fix is best suited for the application's needs at any given time-autonomous, terrestrial or assisted. Kyocera promotes the Kyocera 1xD Module as a low cost CDMA data-only module platform for telemetry applications. It offers reduced power consumption and a smaller envelope size from that of the Kyocera 200 Module. Applications include remote metering or monitoring and alarm applications.
GarrettCom Expands Cyber-Security Solutions for Critical Infrastructure Networks
Cyber security is a critical component of modern networks, especially those serving critical infrastructure sectors such as power utilities and pipeline operations. A set of new networking products software releases from GarrettCom, Inc. enable advanced security capabilities to be integrated into new and existing industrial networks, including those facing extreme environmental conditions and close regulatory scrutiny.
For rigorous network perimeter security via IP Firewall, IPsec VPN and serial-port SSL the company has released the Magnum DX40 and DX800 compact hardened security appliances. Additionally, secure network management protocols are available with the Magnum 6K and DX product lines.
The new software releases include MNS-6K-Secure for Magnum Ethernet switches, and MNS-DX Release 1.3 for Magnum DX routers and terminal servers. These software releases continue GarrettCom's focus on the comprehensive magnum secure network framework (MSNF), which consists of six key elements. These elements include secure network management, perimeter security, serial and Ethernet port security, access control, network and back-up recovery and legacy non-routable protocol secure transport.
GarrettCom's Magnum Secure Networking initiative, including MSNF, is largely spurred on by the power utility industry's stringent NERC Critical Infrastructure Protection standards for cyber security. The new software releases are dominated by security-focused features, and also include other features more generally applicable to flexible, high-performance industrial networking.
MNS-6K-Secure is a new version of GarrettCom's MNS-6K network management software for Ethernet switches. It adds secure management via SSH to SNMPv3 and RADIUS/TACACS+ and SSL access security capabilities. MNS-6K-Secure also adds expanded system logging capability, increased concurrent network management users, DHCP server capabilities and larger numbers of VLANs.
MNS-DX 1.3 expands IP firewall capabilities with NAT/PAT, DHCP server and filtering capabilities along with IPsec VPN support including X.509 certificate options. Also included is management security via SSH and SNMPv3, and support for ModBus-TCP to ModBus-RTU inter-networking.

Capgemini Selected to Implement Smart Meter Solution for Southern California Electric & Gas Customers
Capgemini has been chosen by Sempra Energy’s San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E) utility company to provide implementation and integration services for its smart meter project in a program recently approved by the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC).
CPUC Energy Division Resolution approved contracts that “would establish a system capable of collecting and storing data from the meters on an hourly basis [and] lays the foundation for implementation of time-varying rates, including time-of-use and critical peak pricing.”
Under a 3.5 years contract to complete in the spring of 2011, SDG&E selected Capgemini to provide overall program management, system integration and deployment operations management services for its smart meter project.
Smart metering is a two-way network that collects consumer energy consumption information. Through real-time visibility to customer demand and outages, the network enables consumers and the utility to reduce energy demand and improve utility services. The network automates meter reading and provides real-time price signals and information, facilitating better management of energy usage. Smart metering also enhances utility grid operations and outage management.
