A group of Industry leaders has announced that they have officially formed the LoRa Alliance, creating the largest standards-based effort to enable the Internet of Things (IoT). The LoRa Alliance has achieved an extremely high interest level since announcing its formation plans this January, according to Inventures, the company overseeing the LoRa Alliance and many other successful global technology alliances.

The LoRa Alliance mission is to standardize the Low Power Wide Area Networks (LPWANs) being deployed around the world to enable IoT, machine-to-machine (M2M), smart-city and industrial applications. Alliance members intend to collaboratively drive the LoRa protocol’s (the LoRaWAN protocol) global success, by sharing knowledge and experience to ensure interoperability among all telecom operators and private networks deploying the technology. The LoRaWAN protocol offers many benefits over competing technologies, such as bi-directionality, security, mobility for asset tracking, and accurate localization.
Many research firms and industry leaders predicted that by 2022, the number of IoT-connected devices is expected to reach more than 50 billion, with up to 60 percent of them predicted to be low-power devices requiring wide-area networks that can’t be served by existing technologies such as cellular or Wi-Fi.
The LoRa technology allows public or private multi-tenant networks to connect multiple applications into the same network infrastructure, enabling new IoT, M2M, smart-city, sensor-network and industrial-automation applications. Device manufacturers and developers are proposing LoRa technology-based solutions at a lower total cost of ownership (TCO) with longer battery lifetime that often do not need a powerful cellular connection. The LoRa Alliance, with its highly efficient LoRaWAN protocol, enables new business models and makes the IoT more attractive to both developers and end users. The projected IoT volumes can only be reached with a global approach to driving TCO lower. LoRaWAN technology satisfies the requirements of many applications that need to go beyond the reach of cell-phone towers and Wi-Fi networks.
